First day in USA

Juan, Dad, Mom
Mom, Dad, Aunt Ida, me
With Aunt Ida
Bagels for breakfast before I'm off to the USTA It was the Sunday before the US Open starts - entrance is free and I am pumped! Hoping that my fave players (Agassi, Safin & Nadal) practise so that I can get a glimpse of them up close in the flesh! Fingers crossed!!!

P/S: Our humble abode (Flushing YMCA) was in an area that reminded me of my trip to Seoul, Korea. ALL the signs on the buildings/shops were in Korean characters it's so freaky. The YMCA's quite a walk to the Subway station but at least it's just one stop to the Open.

The Longest Flight

Waiting patiently...
Saturday, 27 August 2005

Wow, where do I even begin?!

Arrived at 7am (way too early if you add in the travelling time to the airport) to find check-in lines waaay too chaotic to say the least. Terrible, terrible implementation. Lines were way up to the entrance and snaked all over the floor. No officers to instruct confused patrons too.... wtf????

With such an anal queuing system everyone was boarded much later than normal as expected but it's okay, we're all in, right? Or so I thought! Was already settled in when the captain announced that the flight can't take off as the air space was to be used for National Day celebration airshow practice.

Wtf??? Shouldn't things like this be known in advance so that the passengers can be duly informed??? Unbelievable! So we had to get our things out of the overhead compartment and out of the plane. Waited for 3 hours in the waiting room - as if our 22 hours long flight (including transit time at Stockholm) wasn't long enough....

And the hits keep on coming...

Upon arrival at Newark, all young Malaysian men were detained. We waited for my brother for over an hour... Thank god for the company of some Malaysian students who were waiting for their detained friends. Honestly, if I was a student in USA, I'd probably just stay in the States. All this hassle is just aggravating.

Tried to call the YMCA where we were staying to say that we were still coming and got reprimanded by the police cos no cellphones were allowed. I go down to the baggame claim to find a public phone and of course I saw an employee talking loudly on her cell... and NO public phone (they were all pass customs). So that would have to wait...

And finally my bro emerged! Apparently, he was not questioned, but just had to fill in a form. But as it was already past 12 midnight (thanks to the 3 hrs delay) there was only 1 officer on duty and the officer actually has to key in (I can't believe they can't just use a machine readable form) each form. Oh my gawddddd....

At least we weren't the last to be out... there were 3 other Malaysians...

But of course we MUST be the last one out! Ian mistakenly gave the customs declaration form (1 per family) to the immigration officer so we were asked to go back upstairs to get it back from him. Of course, by now, that particular officer, plus nearly all the officers has gone back...

By the time we got out it was just waaay too late so the Ground Transportation counter was closed - as I expected. But of course, first things first... Call the YMCA! Obviously, I got scolded for informing them so late. Like it was my fault! I didnt know we'd be thaaat long atimmigration.... At that point I was beyond pissed tho... I just wanted to get the hell outta the airport.

Luckily we got a nice cabbie who happened to be a Muslim of Libyan heritage who grew up in Italy. He was definitely more pious than the whole lot of us put together. Interesting...

Then there was the mix up of rooms at YMCA but hey, I'm inside the YMCA already, what's another 40 minutes delay right? Just think happy thoughts... you're going to the US Open grounds tomorrow!!
